Varicose veins and hemorrhoids are common discomforts in the third trimester. These problems often occur at the same time. Varicose veins can develop in the legs, rectum, around the anus, in vagina, and external genitals. Hemorrhoids are varicose veins formed in the rectum and anus.

Increased blood volume, the baby’s weight, or hormonal changes contribute to blood pooling, making veins swell and forming varicose veins and hemorrhoids. Common signs include itching, pressure, or pain around the veins. Most varicose veins and hemorrhoids improve greatly after the baby is born.
