What is a Levonorgestrel 1.5mg tablet?
Levonorgestrel 1.5 mg tablet is emergency contraception that helps prevent pregnancy before it starts when taken within 72 hours after unprotected sex or if your birth control falls through. It is a backup method and is not meant to be used as a regular form of birth control.
Levonorgestrel is available in multiple brands, such as My Way, My Choice, and Plan B One-Step. Levonorgestrel is sometimes referred to as the “morning after pill.”
Is Levonorgestrel an abortion pill?
No. A Levonorgestrel 1.5 mg tablet is not an abortion pill. Levonorgestrel helps prevent pregnancy, not terminate it. Levonorgestrel doesn’t work if you're already pregnant.
Is Levonorgestrel effective?
Levonorgestrel can significantly decrease the chance that you get pregnant when used as directed. The sooner you take Levonorgestrel after unprotected sex, the better it works.
If your weight is over 165 pounds, the efficacy of Levonorgestrel as an emergency contraception may decrease. In such cases, Ella (ulipristal acetate tablet 30 mg) could be a better option, but it is only available with a prescription. Ella can be taken within 120 hrs (5 days) after sex. If your weight is over 195 pounds, the efficacy of ella may also decrease. However, certain IUDs can be used as emergency contraception within 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex, regardless of your weight. This method is considered the most effective type of emergency contraception.
