Latina Action Day is a powerful day of advocacy and unity, bringing together over 400 Latinas from across California to speak directly to state leaders about issues that matter most including healthcare, education, economic opportunity, and civic engagement. Hosted by Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE), this day is the only statewide event focused on putting Latina voices at the center of policymaking.
This year, Latina Action Day took place in Sacramento, CA and featured the release of the California Equity in Maternal Health Report. This report is a collaboration between HOPE and Black Women Organized for Political Action (BWOPA). The report highlights real experiences of over 800 Black and Latina women and highlights the barriers they face when trying to access respectful, safe, and culturally competent care during pregnancy and childbirth.
Key Findings from the report:
1 in 4 Black women and Latinas (26%) find it difficult to access obstetric and gynecological care.
Nearly half of Black women and Latinas (57%) report some level of unfair or adverse treatment during a pregnancy or birthing experience.
Black women and Latinas express low levels of confidence in the systems in place to support women and birthing people while they are pregnant, giving birth, or after giving birth.
74% of Black women and Latinas report that economic insecurity and the impact of childbearing on their health factor into their decision about whether to have a child.
Most Black women and Latinas report experiencing depression (55%) and/or anxiety (43%) during pregnancy or post-partum.
